Born and bred in Bilbao, Oier Zarraga has now swapped his home town for pastures new in Udine – and says he is relishing the challenge.

“I think I needed a change of scenery and a new experience,” the 24-year-old told Udinese TV. “I was sure this would be the right city for me and I'm very happy.

“I didn't know anything other than Bilbao. I grew up there as a footballer and as a man. It was hard to leave but necessary. I met lots of people who helped me and I'll keep a fond memory of everyone - team-mates and coaches.”

“I owe a lot to Iban Fuentes, who helped me a lot. My style of play is based on what he taught me.

“Serie A is a challenge for me,” Zarraga continued. “La Liga is very technical and you need to be really good on the ball. I know this is a more physical league but I think I'm ready for it. I can't wait to get started.

“[Gerard] Deulofeu is helping me settle in here. He was already top quality when he was young. Once he recovers he's going to be a key player for us.

“There are lots of different languages spoken in the dressing room here, which is very different to Bilbao. Everyone seems to be determined to improve and win together.

“I enjoy watching top footballers training with real intensity, I've been especially impressed by [Nehuen] Perez and Walace.

“I think I'm hard-working and quite skilful. I like pressing high and getting into the opposition area.”

Oier also spoke about his relationship with Andrea Sottil, who had words of praise for the midfielder after the friendly match against ASK Klagenfurt.

“We're still getting to know each other. He's explaining the movements he wants me to make when we have the ball and how he wants me to close down opponents. It was nice to hear he's happy with me. I'll keep working hard to show him I've got what it takes when he sees fit.

“There's competition for places but it was the same in Bilbao. It's normal for everyone to want to play. All I can do train as well as I can so that I get to play as much as possible and help the team.

“On a personal level, I'd like to score more goals, as I haven't managed many the last few seasons.

However, Zarraga knows a player's ability is not determined by goals alone and says he looks up to  the likes of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Sergio Busquets.

“Kroos never loses the ball. It's amazing how accurate his passing is. He's a focal point for the team.

The Basque also shared his first impression of Udine, where he only spent a brief time before the training camp in Austria, abd finished with a message for the fans.

“It's a very nice, relaxed city with the sea 40 minutes away and the mountains nearby.

“I want to thank the fans for the welcome they've given me. It's a pleasure to be here. I want to give everything I have for you. I hope we can have a great season and win lots of games to show everyone what Udinese are capable of.”
