Runjaic: "Earthquake anniversary gives us extra motivation"

The coach speaking ahead of Udinese v Torino

Kosta Runjaic met with the media on Thursday to discuss Saturday's match against Torino, when the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake will be remembered with the team wearing a special commemorative kit.

DAVIS AND THE TREATMENT ROOM

“Davis is very important to us. He's one of our leaders, our top scorer and it's a shame he's not available, but even without him we've never looked for excuses. Other players have shown their qualities. We played well against Lazio and at times against Parma too – that shows the togetherness of the team.

“[Jurgen] Ekkelenkamp is doubtful but we'll see tomorrow. [Jesper] Karlstrom and [Jakub] Piotrowski have niggles too. We'll assess Jesper tomorrow but Piotrowski is unlikely to make it.

“[Nicola] Bertola, [Jordan] Zemura and [Alessandro] Zanoli definitely aren't available. Everyone who's involved will give their all.

TORINO

“We're playing against a good team who have averaged 1.7 points per game since they changed coach. They have some great players like [Cesare] Casadei, [Nikola] Vlasic and [Giovanni] Simeone. Torino will press us more aggressively than Lazio. We'll see what we're able to do against another in-form side.”

ATTACKING OPTIONS

“[Idrissa] Gueye did well against Lazio but we have various options. He ran a lot and had chances, but unfortunately he wasn't able to score. We believe in him and he could start the game. We also have Adam Buksa – he's had more time to train and improve his fitness so he could start, possibly alongside Gueye.”

ATTA

“We're seeing Arthur's maturity. He's taking responsibility. I've very happy he scored two against Lazio. He's a versatile player who can play anywhere in midfield. I hope he can continue playing like this and finish the season well, with goals and assists. He defends well too. He runs hard and is one of the leaders of the team.”

FRIULI EARTHQUAKE ANNIVERSARY

“It's very important to remember this earthquake. Franco Collavino held a meeting and reminded everyone of what happened and how important this anniversary is. The disaster was a painful moment for Friuli is part of the region's history. It should be remembered every day. In one second everything can change. We see that in football too, where games can change in an instant. Hopefully wearing this shirt will give us extra energy. Udinese has represented Friuli in Serie A for over 30 years and only four clubs have been in the top flight for longer than us. This should motivate us to do even better against Torino.”
