Runjaic and Karlstrom analyse Torino defeat

Coach and captain address the media after Monday's match in Turin

Kosta Runjaic and Jesper Karlstrom sat down with journalists for the post-match press conference after Udinese were beaten 2-1 by Torino on Monday night.

Here's what they had to say:

RUNJAIC

“I'm still optimistic. That's my approach in life. It was a solid performance but we lost the game because of one big mistake – for the second game in a row after Cagliari. I have the responsibility as the head of this team. Clearly we have to cut down on these mistakes: it's a lack of communication, of perception. At this level, if you make the kind of mistakes we've made, you pay the price. Tonight the price was us losing the game.

“We made a crucial mistake and our opponents got the winning goal. We conceded our first goal from a set play. Up until then we seemed to be more in control of the game but football doesn't work like that. It's a results business. You have to create results. Against Cagliari we made a mistake and we didn't score, but we had a lot of opportunities to do so. Today we didn't have so many chances to score but we controlled the game, then we made an unbelievable mistake.

“Congrats to Torino. It's a reminder of how unpredictable football is. My players are very disappointed. I don't want to point the finger at anyone because we lose together and we'll win together. My job now is to keep their heads up and get them playing with confidence. We have to win games, or at least not lose. That's my responsibility. Sometimes you go through phases like this and you have to overcome them, helping and encouraging each other.

“There are positives in every game. Today [Oumar] Solet came back and showed his quality for the team. [Giorgi] Chakvetadze played a very solid game on his first start after being injured all pre-season. [Jurgen] Ekkelenkamp confirmed his good form. He's one of the best in Serie A in terms of goals and assists at the moment.

“We did some good things today but there's a 'but' – we lost the game. We have to keep going. We also have to wait for [Jakub] Piotrowski, [Nicolo] Zaniolo and [Keinan] Davis get back up to speed.

“It looks like [James] Abankwah picked up a muscle injury. [Mergim] Vojvoda was a bit tired today after playing every minute of his national team's four games. We couldn't bring in [Alessandro] Zanoli as he's still struggling after his long injury but the good thing is he's back. We also have Palma back, so there are plenty of positives.

“However, at the end of the day we lost today. I'm not desperate; I'm clear and I'll be clear internally too.”

KARLSTROM

“It's a difficult moment for us but we need to push on. We didn't play badly, but obviously we want to win. When you go through a tough spell like this, you have to work even harder and stick together. I'm sure we'll turn things around and the points will come if we keep going like this.

“We have several injuries but we have think about the players we have available. We have a good team and injuries can't be used as an excuse.”
