Joao was born in Vila do Conde, a small town just north of Porto, on 22 March 2001.

He came through local club Rio Ave’s academy before heading south to join Benfica’s youth ranks.

In the 2018/19 season he impressed in the UEFA Youth League, featuring five times. The following campaign saw Joao take a further step forward as he made 18 appearances for the club’s B-team, scoring one goal.

The 2020/21 season saw the youngster step up to Benfica’s first team, appearing once in the league, three times in domestic cup competitions and once in the Europa League. He also featured a further 18 times for the B team.

In the following two seasons Joao headed out on loan to Vitoria Guimaraes and Rio Ave, before being acquired by Watford in January 2023. He featured five times for the Hornets, scoring once.

As for his international record, he has racked up a number of appearances for every level of Portugal’s youth teams below U19 level.

He has been given the number 13 shirt at Udinese.

A warm welcome, Joao!
