Collavino: “Serious damage caused by VAR interference”

The Managing Director’s comments on questionable refereeing decisions

After the game against Sassuolo, managing director Franco Collavino spoke to the press over refereeing decisions in the match.

“We’re angry after this game. There were two VAR decisions that overturned the decision of the referee and changed the course of the game.

“Regarding the first incident with [Nicolo] Zaniolo, we can say that the images were not clear but that was all the more reason for VAR not to intervene. VAR was used incorrectly because the images were unclear and the decision should have been left to the referee, who was just a few steps away and had seen everything clearly.

“The second penalty was a paradoxical situation. That was always a penalty. [Oumar] Solet was fouled and VAR intervention was totally unjustified. We suffered some serious damage with the result of the match already affected at the end of the first half.

“In this case, any technical commentary takes a back seat as there was serious interference from VAR in certain situations.

“Now it’s a statistical fact. How often do we see the referee change his decision after consulting the monitor. He could stick to his original decision but that becomes extremely complicated.

“They need to better explain the application of VAR rules.

“We expected a different result today. We have put together a strong squad and we believe we can play an important role in Serie A, so we’ll get back to work straight away tomorrow morning.”
