Cioffi: "The only option open to us is winning"

The boss looks ahead to Saturday's home game against Monza

Gabriele Cioffi insists Udinese will get over the hump after a run of difficult games that has seen his side slip down the table.

Having faced Lazio, Fiorentina, Milan and Atalanta in their last four matches, the coach knows Saturday's home fixture against Monza offers an opportunity for his team to return to winning ways.

“We know we're having a tough time but when you know there's a problem you find a solution.
Overall our performances have been good to very good – and that includes the Atalanta match. We weren't able to get back in it because they dropped off very deep.

“We've been under pressure since November but this team has overcome worse situations before.
We know what we have to do: the only option open to us is winning.”

The coach then commented on the decision to convert Udinese's one-match stadium ban into a two-match closure of the curva, before sharing some of his selection dilemmas.

“It's still a harsh punishment considering that the few culprits were identified immediately but we respect the decision.

“There are a couple of positions where I still need to make a call but that's my job. Festy Ebosele has struggled a little in recent games and whether I stick with him or give someone else a go is one of the late decisions I have to make.

“Roberto Pereyra is over the problem he had. During the match he could drop back into midfield or move out to the wing.”

Cioffi also admitted his relief that the transfer window is now closed

“Lots of young players have been farmed out to get experience and that's a good thing but the last month wasn't easy. We've brought in a quality player in Lautaro Giannetti. He just needs to be patient and wait his turn.

“Nehuen Perez and Lazar Samardzic staying with is is like another signing.”

Finally, he offered his take on Raffaele Palladino's side.

“Monza are a much more direct team than when we last played them but with the signings they've made they can switch up the way they play. They'll probably sit quite deep, wait for us and play on the counter but they can also use a target man and feed off the second balls. They'll try to manage the game at times and we must be able to stop them doing that.”
