Cioffi: "The lads have responded really well"

The coach's comments the day before Atalanta v Udinese

Gabriele Cioffi insists he and his players are fully focused on the task as they prepare to face Atalanta on Saturday.

The team are looking to bounce back from last Sunday's late defeat to AC Milan, which was marred by the unsavoury incident involving Mike Maignan.

“The lads are in good shape and angry in a good way,” the coach explained. “I can't deny it wasn't easy at the start of the week but the lads have responded really well.

“We were all affected and upset about what happened to Maignan. I think the stadium ban is very harsh on a city and a club that has always been a model of integration. If the actions of just five people can lead to these sanctions, then it's a problem. Any behaviour like that must be condemned but it's got nothing to do with the club or the team. Now we have a six-pointer to play next week and we'll be hugely penalised for it.

“In recent games we've faced Champions League sides like Milan, Atalanta, Inter and despite the level we've been up against we've always left with a feeling of regret at what might have been. That shows this team is alive."

The coach confirmed that Roberto Pereyra is fit enough to play and that Nehuen Perez is not distracted by transfer rumours.

“I'm confident enough to say that I only need look him in the eyes to understand how focused he is. He's on the ball, determined and has been an example to the others this week.”

Asked about his team's apparent lapses in concentration at the end of games, Cioffi quipped: “The staff are going to run out onto the pitch naked in the 75th minute and the shock will wake us up. Joking aside, we've trained with that end-of-game chaos in mind. It's nothing to do with the substitutions. We're training to find different solutions and I think we've found the right medicine this week."

Cioffi also discussed his team selection.

“Martin Payero was ahead of Lazar Samardzic, then Laki had three excellent games. I haven't decided which of them will start tomorrow. The players determine the pecking order by playing well or coming on and having an impact.

“Lautaro Giannetti is fine. He's waiting for his moment – whether it's an incident, a suspension or a 30-minute substitute appearance – to show what he can do."

Meanwhile Udinese's attacking options are set to be bolstered by the return of Keinan Davis and Brenner.

“Keinan will be back with us next week and Brenner is a quality player. I say that knowing that he's humble, intelligent and a quick learner. Let's not forget that we play with 11 plus five coming on.

“Success has had two injuries that would have ended anyone's career. He's improving physically but starting, stopping and starting again is not easy.

“As for Florian Thauvin, it's his birthday today but he has to give us a present tomorrow.”
