The boss chews over a painful last-gasp defeat to Verona

Gabriele Cioffi began his post-match press conference following Udinese's defeat to Verona by responding to suggestions his team suffer from a 'last-minute sickness' owing to the number of late goals they have conceded.

“We don't have a 'last-minute sickness',” he insisted. “We recovered from that against Milan in January. Against Inter we had to play with ten men for the last 15 minutes due to [Florian] Thauvin's injury and we conceded a late goal but I didn't sense fear.

“I didn't see fear tonight either. We were imprecise. We had a few chances from corners that were similar to theirs, plus another three or four great opportunities. Credit to Verona. We have to accept the result. But I wouldn't call it a sickness.

“Today was obviously an important match but we can't think about it now. We have to go into the remainder of the match against Roma with the bit between our teeth, then go to Bologna with the bit between our teeth and play every other game with grit and determination so that we can avoid relegation.

“The lads fought really hard today. I saw 13 players determined to win the game, yet unfortunately we're talking about a defeat because we conceded a last-minute goal from a corner. We were well positioned too so it hurts.”
