On 8 September 1896 the Gymnastics and Fencing Club of Udine won the first national football tournament ever held in Italy, beating host team Turazza and Ginnastica Ferrara in Treviso.
The tournament was organised by the Gymnastics Federation as the FIGC didn't exist yet, and with different rules to those used today. For this reason the trophy is not officially recognised, but it nonetheless means Udine played a central role in the birth and development of football in Italy.
The Udinese players of the time wore black kits with a white star on the chest – the same star the club decided to bring back this season for the club's 130th anniversary.
The team for that historic title success was Bissantini, Chiussi, Kosnapfel, Pellegrini, Milanopulo, Del Negro, Plateo, Spivach, Dal Dan (cap.), Tam, Tolu.
