On 31 May 1999, Francesco Guidolin's Udinese travelled to the Stadio Delle Alpi in Turin for the second leg of a UEFA Cup play-off. The two Bianconeri teams had finished the season level on 54 points together with Roma, who qualified by virtue of the best head-to-head record. So Udinese and Juventus faced off home and away to determine who would play in Europe the following season. A goalless draw at the Stadio Friuli on 28 May meant Udinese took the slenderest of advantages to the opposite side of Italy for the return.
In a virtually deserted Delle Alpi, Filippo Inzaghi gave the home side the lead midway through the first half. Juventus' virtual qualification remained until 20 minutes from the end, when Marcio Amoroso managed to keep Martin Jorgensen's deep cross in play – catching out the opposition defence – and the Brazilian's delivery was smashed into the net by Paolo Poggi. The scoreline stayed the same until the end of the lengthy added time, sealing Udinese's place in the UEFA Cup for the third time.
The following season, with Gigi De Canio in the dugout, Udinese progressed through three rounds, beating Aalborg, Legia Warsaw and Bayer Leverkusen (with Massimo Margotta's historic double), before being knocked out by Slavia Prague in the last 16.
