Coach Alessandro Gridel’s U17 team are halfway there, after winning 1-0 against Roma in Teor in the first leg of the quarter finals of the category championship thanks to a solid performance. Mattia Marello scored an amazing goal that secured the win for the team; this was his fourth in this post season.
In the early part of the match, Udinese U17 proved the most consistent in building play, but it was Roma who got the first chance of the match: a deflected shot by Valerio Maccaroni from the edge of the box. Roma managed to get close to Gioele Venuti’s goal, but were always stopped by the Udinese U17 defenders. Only Samuele Carlaccini managed to get through the opposing defence from the left and served Maccaroni in the middle, whose weak deflection, however, posed no threat to the Udinese U17 goalkeeper.
Halfway through the first half, Marello scored an amazing goal, with a powerful long-range shot into the top corner. Udinese immediately got a chance to score a second goal: they won back the ball in a favourable position, but Pietro Carrillo’s straight shot was an easy save for Christian Sbaccanti.
A big risk for Udinese around the 30-minute mark, when Roma captain Pietro Teixeira Falcetta’s freekick from the edge of the box hit the crossbar. This attempt did not stop Gridel’s team from continuing to dominate the game. Carrillo found his way into the box but didn’t manage to hit the target.
Towards the end of the first half Roma made another attempt with Rafael Ximenez Fasanella, who cut inside onto his right foot and took a shot, which was however saved by Venuti. Following a quick counterattack, Alex Ramku played a through ball to Patrick Visintini, but a Roma defender got there just before the number 9 could take his shot.
At the start of the second half, substitute Simone Raimondi immediately started attacking, but Alessandro Fanin miraculously managed to stop him. After this reaction by Roma, it was Udinese who got three chances to make it 2-0, one after the other. The first was with Marco Vettor, who made it through from the left and hit the near post, with Sbaccanti in his way; the following corner kick sent the ball through the six-yard box without anyone managing to tap it in; finally, Carrillo served Cigaina, who however hit the side netting. Roma tried to react fifteen minutes into the second half, with a combination at the edge of the box, which ended with a shot that barely missed the goal. After an attempt by Marello from the distance, Roma player Teixeira Falcetta took centre stage, first with a free kick saved by Venuti and then shooting just over from the edge of the box.
Once again it was Gridel’s team who dominated the match, but Roma made the most of all the space they could find, with another shot by Raimondi and above all Teixera Falcetta, whose shot from up close was saved by Venuti thanks to his great reflexes.
Towards the end Giulio Anghileri had a chance to make it 2-0 in a scramble, but missed the target. On the other hand Roma had two big chances, first with a shot that went just wide by Teixeira Falcetta and then an attempt by Raimondi from the right, which ended once again with a save by Venuti.
The final result was 1-0: coach Gridel’s U17 team will go to Trigoria on Thursday (the match will be at 12:30pm) with two out of three possible outcomes to qualify for the semis.
